Lanzarote - subjective views

Here gets everybody a chance to tell you why they love this island. They give you the reasons why they spend their time-out here time and again, why they acquired property here or why they made this island their home. Here is space to write about varied facets, some memories, great experiences, recommendation for your favourite restaurant or about the most beautiful beaches. Do you want to contribute to this collection? Then write to us. Including two or four of your favourite photos would be even better. We are looking forward to more contributions about Lanzarote – and your subjective views. Please contact us and send us your favourite four photos.

It is said about Lanzarote: When you see the island for the first time - you either love it or you don’t. It´s true. I, like most of the others, belong to the first group.

Why? There are many reasons. But one reason is, for example, Cesar Manrique. He has spared the island the huge tourist resorts and retained its typical Canary character. Come and see for yourself and compare Lanzarote with all the other Canary Islands.

You find another reason, for example, on Wikipedia where, amongst others, the following places of interest are listed: El Golfo, a semi-submerged crater with a lagoon, Montañas del Fuego - the Fire Mountains in the Timanfaya National Park, the Papagayo Beaches in the south of the island, the Salinas del Janubio, Jameos del Agua - works of art by César Manriques in the lava caves, Los Hervideros - "cooking holes" at the southern lava coast, the Mirador del Río - the northern viewpoint towards César Manrique’s La Graciosa, the Cueva de los Verdes - one of the longest lava tunnels in the world, La Geria - the bizarre vineyard, the Jardín de Cactus - César Manrique’s cactus garden in Guatiza, the Fundación César Manrique - the artist’s former residence and now foundation and museum in Tahiche, the Castillo de Santa Barbara in Teguise, the Castillo de San Gabriel and the Castillo de San José in Arrecife, the Rural Museum in Tiagua, the Monumento al Campesino – a memorial to the farmers with market square near San Bartolomé, the Tropical Park -  45000 qm Bird Park in Guinate, the Valley of  the Thousand Palms in Haría etc… .

These are just the tourist attractions, well worth a visit, but the real Lanzarote can be found away from these sites. I could carry on writing and upload even more pictures but Lanzarote is much better in real.

By the way – I am off to Lanzarote again in April 2010. This is the 42nd time for me – do you believe me now that Lanzarote is a unique place?

Our house is situated in Puerto del Carmen, directly atop the old harbour.                                                                                                                                                     Have a look here: Casa Estaño

Lanzarote has been our hideaway (mostly during the winter months) over and over again – we are "repeat offenders” and have been visiting the island fairly every year since 1990. We have also visited all the other big Canary Islands several times but Lanzarote is fascinating and our passion. You either love this island or not – we have clearly opted for the first. This island offer beaches and bays for every taste and has, away from the coastal areas, still the typical Canary flair - beautiful landscapes and typical small, old villages. The volcanic landscapes in particular the National Park are an absolute highlight. The architecture in the holiday resorts has remained pleasant and the island has fortunately been spared the huge, countryside-disfiguring holiday resorts with their concrete jungles. We discover something new every year or we go back to a well-known place to see it with fresh eyes. Last but not least is the lovely weather in the winter months another reason for visiting this island.

We also like to visit the island’s well-known sites time and again. Here our favourites: National Park Timanfaya, Mirador del Rio, Cuevas de los Verdes, El Golfo, Jameos del Agua, La Geria and Fundación César Manrique.

And this island offers a great touristic infrastructure without giving the impression of mass tourism, especially when you have made individual travel arrangements and have booked your accommodation away from the holiday resorts. "Auszeit Lanzarote" offers exactly that. We spent our last holidays in January 2009 and January 2010 at: Holiday Apartment Oasis La Asomada. (You can read our rating in the property description).

Why do I always come back to Lanzarote? I was attracted to Teneriffe for many years but then I fell in love with Lanzarote…. This unique and diverse island, shaped by volcanic rock, has fascinated me so much. Visiting Timanfaya is like traveling to another time. The sights around Cesar Manrique in the north of the island are spellbinding too. I even "had” to visit Mirador del Río and the caves of Jameos del Agua several times. Lanzerote still offers beautiful locations for pure relaxation. I never before have enjoyed such relaxing holidays as on this island.

Lanzarote, fiery passion with artistic flair!

You will not find huge tourist resorts here and that is a good thing too! Lanzarote fascinates with bizarre landscapes and, thanks to César Manrique, with wonderful places for excursions and beauty spots. Indulge in culinary delights like tapas, Canary specialities and the excellent island wines. Lanzarote has fire in its blood; nature lovers can enjoy walks on the beach, hiking tours through the National Park or just relax and unwind. Enjoy the mild climate, the deep blue sky and the view across the ocean. You can enjoy all this in particular at the Casa Estano in Puerto Del Carmen. Situated in a quiet and exclusive residential area and only a few minutes walk away from a small supermarket where you can buy fresh bread rolls every morning for a sumptuous breakfast on your own terrace with views across the Atlantic Ocean. And if it gets too hot, then take a swim in the private swimming pool. "Auszeit Lanzarote" is the perfect host, always attentive and helpful! Dear Susanne, I am sending you my best regards at this point. You are doing a fine job, keep it up!

Today is not all days – We will come back, no doubt!  Stefanie, Boris, Gisela, Martin and Paul
